What is a Self Paced EMT Course

Southwest EMS Academy offers two types of EMT Courses; Self-paced and Hybrid. A self-paced course means you are able to complete it on your time, when it’s convenient for you and fits in Your Schedule. But that doesn’t mean you are left out on your own to complete the course. You will complete interactive lectures through our online classroom and have the opportunity to attend optional live, online meeting and training sessions where you will discuss your coursework, get all of your questions answered, learn skills from the instructors and chat with your peers from all over the world.

We have a great team which is composed of some of the best Firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics in the business. All of Southwest EMS Academy instructional staff is hand picked based on their diverse and robust experience.

This program has been approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and meets the requirements for licensure in Texas. Upon successful completion you will be eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician’s Certification EMT Exam.

How Does a Self Paced EMT Course Work?

ONLINE COURSEWORK

This work is done in a blended environment. Courses are taken online at your convenience. Optional live online tutoring sessions are incorporated so you are not alone in this learning journey. You will have access to the classroom 24/7 so that you can complete your coursework when it is convenient to you.

OPTIONAL LIVE INSTRUCTOR-LED WEBINARS

You will have the opportunity to take part in many live online classroom sessions with industry leading EMS providers to “Learn From The Pros”. In the learning process, nothing can truly replace the interactive experience with a live instructor. These Live Instructor-led sessions are optional but available to those who need the extra assistance.

Personalized learning – Experienced instructors in a small group can tailor approaches and answer specific questions with learners.
Immediate feedback – If a certain module is confusing, too slow, or too fast, the instructor can immediately adjust the teaching plan to accommodate real-time feedback.
Hands-on experience – With Live Instructor-led Webinars, it’s easier to demonstrate certain tasks such as operating medical equipment or performing a procedure.
Student networking – Students can meet both the instructor and each other. Dedicated time and space for learning also helps some people better absorb the information.

HANDS-ON BOOT CAMP

Once you have completed the required coursework and all related prerequisites, you will schedule a time that is convenient for you to attend the hands-on portion or “Boot Camp Week” at our campus in Burnet, Texas. This week will be spent getting the hands on skills knowledge that is needed to be successful as an EMT in the real world. You will work alongside Fire and EMS personnel in a skills lab environment. The hands-on portion of the class is usually a favorite among students. Students will be involved in special skills sessions like assisting with vehicle extrication, large scale mass shooting scenarios, and much more. This portion of the course will include all State mandated skills verification.

CLINICAL & FIELD EXPERIENCES

At the successful completion of the first two phases you will move along to the Internship Phase. During the Internship Phase you will be scheduled to ride along with multiple Fire and EMS departments. You will also spend time in some of the busiest Emergency Rooms in the area. This experience will be the opportunity to take all that you have learned during your educational experience and use that in the real world environment.

After you have successfully completed all three phases, you will be eligible to sit for the National Registry of EMT’s exam for certification.

What Will I Learn?

The Southwest EMS Academy EMT Course is designed to prepare and qualify you to take the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) EMT written and psychomotor tests for certification as an EMT.

You will learn how to perform the following EMT psychomotor skills with confidence:

Perform a rapid and detailed assessment of a patient with a medical or traumatic emergency.
Recognize the nature and seriousness of the patient’s condition or extent of injuries to assess requirements for emergency medical care.
Give life-saving interventions to treat problems associated with airway, breathing, and circulation.
Administer appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the patient’s condition.
Given a mass casualty incident, perform triage.
Perform safely and effectively the expectations of the job description of the EMT.
